After some members had gone out on Thursday and caught good size snapper, this was a highly anticipated snapper competition. Everyone was keen.
There was concern that the wind might make it uncomfortable but wise and experienced members gave it the typical Aussie's "she will be right" thumbs up. Wind conditions made it a bit choppy early morning but settled as the day went on to 10/15 knots.
The day started at 4am. A big effort was made chasing and sounding out the snapper from St Kilda to the middle of Port Phillip, Black Rock & everywhere in between. Needless to say the snapper didn't play ball and it was hard going. Six fish were caught on various baits (blue bait, calamari, silver whiting) in 6 to 12 metres. Water temperature was approximately 17°.
Mother nature turned on a beautiful day and everyone enjoyed it. Joe Donnini managed 2 lovely 4kg+ snapper. Thanks goes out to John Costa & Brain Paice for their knowledge, boats & great company. The competition finished 12 mid day.
