Kyalite / Easter freshwater comp - April 19/04/19
Good Friday
9 members attended this event.
Our club has been camping on the Edwards River for over Fifty years and this year we welcomed some new faces to the Kyalite competition.
Ange Dawson and Simon Collaco fished the Edwards river for their first Easter comp. Ange out-fished boating partner Richard Higlett with two lovely Yellow Belly, the largest weighing in at 1305 grams.
David Cahir and his mate Bruce along with Rob Miles and Ross Halligan all fished the Edwards for no fish.
Daniel Trafford and Bernie Harris fished the Wakool with great results.
The weigh in that night saw Daniel weigh in 4 yellow’s for 5010 grams. Bernie Harris weighed in 2 fish for 2230 grams. A total of 8 fish were caught that day.
Saturday
An early start saw Richard and Ange fishing The Wakool with Shrimp being the best bait. Daniel and Bernie also fished the Wakool with the rest of the members spread around the system.
Fishing was slower than the previous day but persistence paid off. Ange again was getting among the fish and pulled in a whopping yellow belly and followed up with a good fish. Richard was struggling and trying every trick in the book to keep up with his partner. Some even saying sabotage. Due to a less than ideal keeper net, Ange’s large yellow escaped from the net leaving both anglers rather flat!!
At the end of the day Daniel weighed in 2 Yellows for 2390 grams, Bernie weighed in 2 yellow’s for 2435 grams. Ange weighed in 1 yellow for 785 grams and Richard also 1 fish for 760 grams.
The rest of the crew went fishless but the beauty of riverside camping, clear starry nights and camp fires, made up for it.
Sunday
A beautiful morning saw most of us repeating what we had tried the day before. Richard and Ange in the Black Pearl were shadowing Daniel and Bernie in the Jam Tin. Rob and Ross were stationed across the river from us and it was clear that with a dropping barometer the fish were going off the bite.
However Richard got a great bite after lunch and pulled in his biggest fish for the weekend a yellow of 1460 grams.
That night we all bemoaned the fact that the fishing was hard. Bruce Sedawie entertained us around the camp fire with his guitar and some tunes that included some Eagles classics. Great musician but not so great fisherman, ha ha.
Monday
With half a day’s fishing most were up early to no avail. The fish had completely shut down. Patience and persistence were no match for the Barometer.
The final weigh in saw Daniel Trafford take out the weekend with 6 fish for 7400 grams.
Bernie Harris 2nd with 4 fish for 4665 grams and Richard Higlett 3rd with 3 fish for 2650grams.
Ange Dawson in her first comp for the club came fourth with 3 fish for 2525grams.
A total of 16 fish, all Golden Perch were caught for the long weekend, distributed among 4 anglers!!
