Lake Fyans Freshwater comp – June 22, 23 2019
Lake Fyans is a small lake at the base of the Grampians near Pomonal, 15km’s west of Stawell. Known for it’s weedy habitat, large trout and redfin.
Six club members and four guests competed in this popular event on the club calender.
Saturday - We were given a respite from the rainy days and blessed with blue skies and little wind.
The fishing was not so blessed.
With three boats on the water early, and our favoured Tassie Devils in tow, Richard struck early with a nice redfin. He then lost another while partner Ange could only look on.
Clinton Scott and mate Anthony struggled as did Tony Dorner and Nick Jugovic.
After a couple of hours of nothing but clearing weed off the hooks, both Clinton and Richard decided to pull up stumps and try Wartook. This was in the hope of less weed and more fish.
Wartook is a lovely lake 40 minutes from Lake Fyans in the Grampians below Mckenzies falls. Very scenic with a good concrete boat ramp and all the features you would want for good fishing.
The lake looked promising but did not deliver. The fish were shut down and neither boat scored a catch.
The weigh in was quick, Richard and his 410gram redfin were leading going into Sunday.
Sunday - Richard and Ange were on the Lake (Fyans) at dawn and greeted by a heavy fog. The strategy was to troll, troll and troll using tassies, worms and soft plastics.
Ange was on the right side of the boat and hauled in a redfin, quickly followed by a nice rainbow trout. She used her drag well and stayed calm as the fish was netted, her first trout !!
Her casting had improved so much since last trip, I’m sure she has been practising at lunch time.
Clinton also managed to troll up a nice brown while the rest of us went fishless.
With only half a day to fish and the fog finally lifting the final weigh in saw:
Ange Dawson win the weekend with 2 fish for 950grams (redfin and rainbow trout)
Clinton Scott 2nd with one brown trout for 785 grams (heaviest fish for the weekend)
Richard Higlett 3rd with a redfin of 410 grams
Thanks to all those that attended including Dawn and Les Penrose for a great weekend away.
